Happy Left Handers Day: Did You Know…
Today, August 13th is Left Handers Day; a whole 24 hours to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of the left handers.
Left Hander’s day was first observed by Dean R. Campbell, founder of the Lefthanders International, Inc. in 1976 and it was later declared an official celebration by the Left-Hander’s Day Club on August 13, 1997.
However, being left-handed hasn’t always been a celebration. Previous generations viewed left-handedness as evil, and associated it to being possessed by the devil and even involved in witchcraft.
In the 19th and 20th Century, Schools also condemned children for using their left hand, and they were compelled to use their right hand for all writing tasks; teachers would employ a variety of methods to encourage right-handedness, including tying the left arm behind the back and knuckle-raps for writing with the ‘wrong’ hand.
Even as late as the 1960s and 1970s, Catholic school teachers would routinely inflict corporal punishment and psychological pressure on left-handed students, ranging from accusations of being in cahoots with the Devil to even being Communist.

A Right World
Only a leftie would know the true pressures in a ‘right handed world.’ From using a pair of scissors, a can opener, playing certain musical instruments, using tools to struggling with binder folders; the daily battles are real.
However, despite this still being the case in some situations, the world has started to cater for the minority, including left-handed scissors, left-handed pens, left-handed writing skills activities and school starter kits for left handers. There are now even shops and online websites specifically for lefties.
Some studies undertaken by Scientists have even resulted in them associating left-handedness with intelligence, out-of-the-box thinking, and artistic talent. Here at NDM Creative, we are lucky enough to have three left handers in the company, therefore we’ll take that.
Happy Left Handers Day from all the team!
